For Music

Some Vocalo P became real musicians.

“ryo” is one of them. He sometimes provides music for video game companies.
The video below is ryo’s work. This is one of the theme songs of “Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA,” a series of rhythm game created by Sega and Crypton.

During 2000s, people in music and recording industries considered that the internet is going to kill music.

It means that since anyone can listen to any music on the internet, they won’t buy music.
They estimated that nobody wants to pay things which are available for free.

If listeners stop buying music, only thing musicians can offer is experience such as concerts.
However, this method applies to only currently famous musicians, so people in those industries thought that it is impossible to bring up new musicians.

It is true that by using the internet, anyone can upload their own works.
But as the more users of the internet increase, the more difficult becoming famous on the internet is.

However, Hatsune Miku gave a chance to them.

People listening to song sung by Hatsune Miku see their works as a Hatsune Miku’s song.
Thus, if people who want to be musician create songs and make Hatsune Miku sing them,
the possibility to be watched increases dramatically.

Hatsune Miku was released in 2007.
At first, music industries did not treat VOCALOID songs fairly.
It actually stands to reason because there are no basis to evaluate them.

There is no doubt that Hatsune Miku made VOCALOID known to public.

The more users of Hatsune Miku increase, the more famous this genre becomes.

In addition, the people who benefit the most from this boom are everyone who involved in these creative activities.

Before that, amateurs could not get chance to listen to their songs fairly.
But now, they can get feedbacks from fans of VOCALOID songs.
These evaluations make them grow and enable them to produce more superior works.

When one Vocalo P becomes famous, the other VOCALOID artists also can take advantage of his fame.
They are banding together and strengthen their weapon which allows them to demonstrate their abilities to the public.
The name of their weapon is VOCALOID.

For Technological Innovations

The artists who involved in these creative activities are not only musicians but any people in any field of art.
Thus, to support these activities, many people provide useful technologies for free,
so VOCALOIDs have triggered significant technological innovations.
And it is important to notice that you do not have to pay anything to download software created for VOCALOID works.

MikuMikuDance (MMD)

“MikuMikuDance,” or MMD, is one of them.
It is a proprietary freeware animation program that lets users animate and create 3D animation movies, originally produced for the Vocaloid character Hatsune Miku.
The MikuMikuDance program itself was programmed by Yu Higuchi (HiguchiM) and has gone through significant upgrades since its creation.
Its production was made as part of the VOCALOID Promotion Video Project (VPVP).

This is an example of MMD works.

The other famous freeware is “UTAU.”
This is a Japanese singing synthesizer application created by Ameya/Ayame.

This program is similar to the Vocaloid software, with the difference that it is freeware instead of being released under third party licensing.

This software is known as manual Vocaloid.

It was created by re-editing an existing singing voice, extracting tones as WAV files and reassembling them.
UTAU has the ability to use wave files provided by the user, so that a singing voice can be synthesized by introducing song lyrics and melody.

UTAU itself was first made famous when the creator of Kasane Teto released the character posing as a Vocaloid character as part of an April Fool's joke in 2008.

The song of the video below is sung by Kasane Teto, a manual VOCALOID.

MMDAgent is a state of the art speech synthesis software developed by the Nagoya Institute of Technology.

This is a toolkit for building voice interaction system.

This software employs MikuMikuDance as a foundation for its 3D rendering system,
as well as allowing users to mantain a lively conversation with their 3D companion.

The video below demonstrates its amazing technology.

Again, it is free software.
The problem is, it only adapts to Japanese. Σ(゚Д゚|||){whaaaat!?)

For Business ~Open Innovation~

Recently, some recording companies and music distribution service companies like apple store start to sell VOCALOID music.

VOCALOID music has an absolute advantage for the companies when they commercialize it.

That is, those companies have already known listeners attitude toward the songs before they’re going to sell it.
In other words, they can estimate its risks and benefits to sell the songs precisely.

Hence, if they commercialize VOCALOID songs, they certainly profit from the songs.

In terms of copyrights, as mentioned before, Crypton offers distinctive rules.

  • Copyright of a song which is sung by Crypton’s VOCALOIDs belongs to the person (or people) who wrote its lyrics and music; hence, in order to commercialize it, a company needs to enter into contract with the person (or people) directly.
  • Right of a VOCALOID’s singing data belongs to the person who made it, as long as the person followed the user’s policy.
  • To manage copyright issue, writer(s) of the song’s lyrics and music can decide and entrust a copyright collection society.
It is also possible to manage its copyright by themselves.
  • Normally, the singer of the song also has copyright, and the right of VOCALOIDs as software belongs to Crypton Future Media Inc.
Thus, when someone does commercial activity by using the software’s name as the singer, the person or the company needs a permission from Crypton.

It is important to point out Crypton’s commercial strategy.

This company did not persist in keeping copyright of their software product.
Rather than that, they open its right for the public use.

As a result, its VOCALOIDs became well-known, and it allow the company to strengthen its position throughout multi-media industries.

Traditionally, companies have made profits by monopolizing rights of the product or service.

However, Crypton establishes a new business model and proposes successful case.
It is the pioneer of new business model.
That is, open innovation.
