As a Computer Music

VOCALOIDs has extended the possibilities of computer music.

Before VOCALOID was born, composers of computer music could create any kinds of music except songs.
Even though creators write lyrics, they could not put them into music.
Thus, VOCALOID allowed them to complete their own music on their computer.

This technology extended the possibilities of what people can create on their computer and the possibilities of creative activities.

VOCALOIDs enabled people to compose more unique music.

VOCALOIDs can sing what human beings cannot sing.
For instance, they sing high sound area without breathing in the middle of the song.
The video below is one example of this kind of song.

~Spinal Fluid Explosion Girl (脳漿炸裂ガール) by Hatsune Miku, GUMI~

These points are the basic appeals of VOCALOID (technology) and VOCALOIDs (software products).
In addition to them, Crypton Future Media Inc.'s VOCALOIDs even give creators inspirations.

As a Virtual Idol

Crypton thought it'll be very interesting if they could create a singing software which has an anime-character-like personality
because this concept allows this company to produce next generation musical instrument.

Thus, Crypton personalized the voice of VOCALOID software itself.

This idea brought new relation between creators and software.

Creators are inspired by the characters of VOCALOID, so creators are given stimulus by VOCALOIDs and produce new songs by using VOCALOIDs.

However, in terms of "characters," Crypton actually provides very few information about each VOCALOID.

In case of Hatsune Miku, the following data is everything about her.

  • The illustration of its package
  • Age: 16 years
  • Height: 158 cm (5.18 ft)
  • Weight: 42 kg (93 lb)
  • Best Genre: Dancing Pops/ Idol's Pops
  • Best Tempo Range: 70–150bpm
  • Best Vocal Range: A3-E5

Why didn't Crypton decide detailed official information?

They did not want to deprive creators of a chance to create their own Miku.

Since Miku is selfless, creators can imagine her personality freely, so Miku can be born many times.

She is the one, but she is the image of thousands of artists.

Since she is eternally 16 years old, artists might create songs about love or friendship based on the feeling of a 16-year-old girl.

It provides a lot of dramas for Hatsune Miku.

That is why many people who listened to her songs draw illustrations and write novels about the songs.

For this reason, uses of VOCALOIDs are called Vocalo P (Vocaloid Producer/ Producers of VOCALOIDs),
and putting VocaloP at the head of the terms, a lot of interesting projects have been started up (One of them became anime already).

This is the birth of virtual idol. People experience the sense that is like they are producing dramas.
The actors of their dramas are, of course, VOCALOIDs.

As a Community Tool

As mentioned before, people who use VOCALOIDs to create songs are called Vocalo P.

VOCALOIDs take advantage of the concept of an entertainer and the concept of a character in anime.
And they are now the principal axes of creative activities.

These creative activities normally take following steps.

1. A Vocalo P compose a VOCALOID song and upload it on Piapro.

2. An illustrator who listened to the song draws an image and upload it on Piapro.

3. Another illustrator or a 3D-video creator makes music video and upload it on NicoNico or YouTube.

After that, following things might happen.

  • A singer covers the song and upload it on NicoNico or YouTube.
  • A dancer makes dance for the song and upload it on NicoNico or YouTube.
  • A 3D-video creator makes a video of the dance by using VOCALOID which sings the song.
  • A writer writes a novel of the song (It can be both official and unofficial).
  • A comic writer draw a comic book of the song (It can be both official and unofficial).
  • A record company releases its CD officially.
  • An animation company makes anime of the song.

It is important to emphasize that those artists, illustrators, video creators, singers, dancers, writers, and comic writers are usually amateurs.

It means that anyone can participate in the creative activity and complete one artwork.

You might be worried about copyright,
but interestingly, those artworks using Crypton’s VOCALOIDs have very unique contractions.

You might have notice the word “Piapro,” appeared on the lists above.
It is the community site provided by Crypton.
Crypton established it in order to help the artists in each field to communicate and promote their creative activities.

The details of copyright issues of Crypton’s VOCALOID will be mentioned later chapter.

By the way, NicoNico is a video-sharing website.
Its service is available in Japan, Taiwan, and the U.S.
The users of this website are mainly people who like Japanese subcultures like anime and manga.
There are more VOCALOID works than any other video-sharing websites.

If you’re interested in Piapro, click here to go to the website.

If you’re interested in NicoNico, click here to go to the website.

These characters are Crypton’s VOCALOIDs.
